This is probably the most difficult question since Paganism is so diverse in thought and beliefs from individual Pagan to individual Pagan. Pagans have been around long before the rise of Christianity and the word Paganism comes from the Latin word paganus, meaning "country dweller". This word was used by the Romans for the people who maintained their own religion during the rise of Christianity and were usually the people living in the country, away from the bigger cities.
Today, Pagan basically means any system of beliefs or religion that are not Christian or "one God" religions. Here are a few misconceptions out there that need to be cleared up.
- No, we do not worship the devil. That is a Christian concept so If you mean Satanist then say that.
- Pagan is NOT a dirty word!
- We are open minded, free thinking people and do not subscribe to being told how to worship or what to believe.
- We are not "anti-Christian". We believe you can follow any faith you choose.
- We love the Earth and worship it as sacred.
- We do magic as a source of personal growth so NO, we don't use it to turn people into toads. "And it harm none, do what ye will" This is the Wiccan rede...harm none means HARM NONE.
These were just a few things about Pagans and each one of us has their own individual thoughts and beliefs so you need to ask each individual Pagan you might meet what they believe, it's called talking.:)
There are some good resources out there to learn even more about Pagans and we truly hope that you make yourself informed before passing any kind of judgment or continuing the lies about Paganism that are out there. Here are a few links that hopefully will help with that idea.
